Join us innovate the future!The Fuel Development, Performance and Qualification group at INL is seeking skilled engineers for our Nuclear Fuel Performance Principal Investigator role.

This position focuses on the deployment of a wide range of micro and advanced reactor fuel systems.

Work products are anticipated to be developing or refining approaches for setting fuel system performance limits, establishing new methods for comparison of models to a wide range of post irradiation exam data, and supporting experiment design based on fuel performance modeling.

Several possible projects may require this skillset including taking a primary role in the: Design and fabrication of accelerated irradiation testing experiments intended to enable rapid development of fuel and core structural performance models; Development of methodologies to set fuel performance limits for a range of micro and advanced reactor applications based on application of historical data to new designs; andConceptualization of irradiation testing experiments intended to probe the transient performance of nuclear fuel systems.Project selection will be based on candidate skillset and research interests with multiple positions available.

Based on the nature of the projects, the candidate is expected to be a strong asset to our interdisciplinary R& D team that is capable of working effectively both independently and providing technical direction as part of larger multifunctional teams.

Additionally, this position will take the lead role in documenting complex experimental and analytic efforts in project or programmatic reports, continuing to increase profile in the field by writing scientific manuscripts for journal publication, and presentation of research results at national and international conferences and meetings.

QualificationsDegree in Nuclear, Mechanical or Materials Engineering, or related discipline, is requiredB.S.

and 3 years experiencePhD and 2 years experiencePreference for Graduate degree and more than 2 years of experience in neutronics and/or thermal/hydraulics analyses, nuclear fuels development, including irradiation testing and/or post-irradiation examination.

Experience with analytical and modeling tools such as 1-D systems codes (RELAP5 or similar), finite element analysis (ABAQUS or similar), computational fluid dynamics (STAR-CCM+ or similar), and/or application of fuel performance codes (BISON or similar).

This position is subject to export control restrictions per the Department of Energy.

For this reason, you must be either a US Citizen or a US Green Card holder to qualify for the job.
