If so, we might have just the opportunity you’re looking for!Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL) Power and Energy Systems Department within the Energy and Environment Science & Technology (EES&T) Directorate at INL is seeking a senior controls engineer with experience in power systems!

Applicants for this position should have expertise in at least one of the following focus areas:Distribution systems, including distributed energy resources (DERs) or distribution system management solutions to enable higher DER penetrationMicrogridsTransmission or bulk power system, including modeling of bulk power system generation technologies or expertise in transmission system stability, reliability, and resilienceBuildingsElectric vehicle chargingIndustrial integrated processes, their controls and integration with the grid.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, ideation, planning, coordination, and implementation of controls solutions and related projects.

Experience with power system testing using digital real-time simulation environments and using power and/or controller hardware-in-the-loop is a plus.

The ability to acquire and maintain a security clearance is also a plus.The successful candidate is expected to lead research projects, drive technical capability development, and collaborate with research sponsors.

The candidate should have prior experience working both individually and in teams in a fast-paced, high-tempo research environment.

Demonstrated ability to lead the design and implementation of research projects is required.

Excellent written and verbal communications skills are also required.EES& T’s role and mission’s to develop and advance clean, smart, and secure energy systems crucial to national security, economic prosperity, and environmental sustainability.

It embodies science and engineering functions that contribute enabling technologies for today’s national energy portfolio.

It also augments the country’s technical ability to collaborate on and overcome critical energy and water challenges that already impact tomorrow’s energy choices.

This position supports and integrates actions, activities, projects, & initiatives of the EES& T Directorate’s Integrated Mission Plan and other INL research, development, demonstration, and deployment (RDD& D) efforts.Responsibilities Include:Take appropriate actions to:Ensure safe, secure, and environmental compliance within operations and spaces.Safely maintain research activities.Perform a Timeout or Stop Work on any laboratory space equipment, activity, or operation when continued operations are deemed unsafe or may result in an environmental concern.Resolve deficiencies, improve work practices, and maintain research within the approved safety and quality envelope.Meet cost, scope, and schedule for assigned activitiesProvide mentorship to review processes, including weekly reports, quarterly reviews and reports, and annual performance evaluations.Minimum Requirements:PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, System Engineering or related field plus 2 years’ experience | Master’s degree plus 3 years’ experience | Bachelor’s degree plus 5 years’ experience.Must have demonstrated technical understanding, research collaborations, and professional recognition through an established publication and/or patents record in one or more of the topics listed in the position role.

Must also have demonstrated proposal writing and research project execution experience.A demonstrated background and solid understanding of controller design for diverse use cases and in the context of institutional decision making (e.G.

maximizing cost-benefit in real-world applications) is a must.

Understanding of power markets, utility decision making, grid architectures, power conversion systems, complex and flexible industrial processes (e.G.

hydrogen production through electrolysis), and hardware-in-the-loop testing is preferable.Preferred Requirements:A PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, System Engineering or related field.
