Lifeguard

City of Sandpoint

This is a Full-time position in Sandpoint, ID posted February 22, 2021.

nnThe City of Sandpoint is looking for strong swimmers with a love of the outdoors to help us safeguard our beaches this summer.

We will provide 40 hours of paid United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) open-water training prior to clearing lifeguards to go on the stands.

Several positions are available, including multiple vacancies for Lifeguard Trainee ($11.75 hourly), Lifeguard ($13.50 hourly), and 2 vacancies for Assistant Head Lifeguard ($15.00 hourly).

Lifeguards are on the stand 7 days a week, beginning Saturday, June 5th through Monday, September 6th.

Head Lifeguard position has already been filled for the 2021 season.

Monitors recreational areas and City beaches to provide assistance and protection to beach visitors.

Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor and/or Head Lifeguard.

Some positions may be called upon to oversee other lifeguards as the Assistant Head Lifeguard in charge for specific days, and carry out the duties of the Head Lifeguard in his/her absence.

Duties are performed in an outdoor environment with moderate exposure to adverse weather conditions, excessive noise, direct and indirect sunlight, open water, or potential personal danger.nn ESSENTIAL DUTIES This list is ILLUSTRATIVE only and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed by the incumbent of this class.

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Rescue distressed persons, using rescue techniques and equipment.

Contact emergency medical personnel in case of serious injury.

Examine injured persons and administer first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, if necessary, using training and medical supplies and equipment.

Monitor recreational areas, such as swimming areas, on foot or from towers.

Complete and maintain records of weather and beach conditions, emergency medical treatments performed, and other relevant incident information.

Warn recreational participants of inclement weather, unsafe areas, or illegal conduct.

Observe activities in assigned areas to detect hazards, disturbances or safety infractions.

Inventory and maintain all equipment/supplies associated with lifeguard duties at City Beach.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Positions assigned to Head and Assistant Head Lifeguard may include the following duties: Assist with recruitment and training of lifeguard staff, including preseason United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) training.

Develop weekly/monthly work schedules and maintain daily time reports for lifeguard staff.

Organize and plan in-service training twice a week throughout the season.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Demands: Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and to communicate effectively in person and on a telephone.

Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions, scan designated area(s), recognize swimmers in distress, possible hazards, unsafe behaviors, and emergency situations.

Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to grasp, pull, twist, push, and kick.

Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, and balance, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to run, jump, dive, swim, lift, pull, twist, rotate, in and out of the water; sit for up to 40 minutes per rotation.

Jobs in this class require performing repetitive motions in fingering and hand/wrist/arm movements.

Related job tasks may require, with or without reasonable accommodation, lifting or moving up to 50 pounds frequently and up to the total body weight of a drowning victim occasionally, and stooping, bending, crouching and reaching.

Swim 500 meters in under 10 minutes.

Perform first aid and rescues in and out of the water with people of all ages and size.

Physician documented adequate vision, hearing, and physical ability/stamina to perform open water lifeguard duties.

ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Must be at least 16 years of age Must be available to work holidays and weekends Must be able to swim 500 meters, demonstrating use of freestyle, breaststroke, and side stroke, within a 10-minute period Must complete onsite United States Lifesaving Association (USLA) training prior to start of season Applicants for Head and Assistant Head Lifeguard must have a minimum of one year of experience Preferred Certifications: American Red Cross, Starfish, National Aquatic Safety Company, YMCA, Ellis & Associates or equivalent Lifeguard Certification Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
